Current Workshops in Brief

All our workshops have practical hints and tips, handouts, where to go for more information, looking & working with examples of documents. Bring your own research, and we also make full use of the library & collections in the Treetops Research Centre.

There will be a short break during each workshop for tea / coffee which will be available at a small charge (30p)

If you are attending all day, you are welcome to bring a packed lunch

To book a place on each of these Workshops, please print off a copy of the Application Form, complete and return it with your remittance to Treetops Research Centre. Numbers are restricted.

Applications accompanied by a completed Membership Application Form and remittance should pay Member rate.
Non-Members who join during the Course will receive a refund

We will look at what resources are available, and where to find information, on the following Wars: Napoleonic Wars to 1815 (including Waterloo), Crimean War, Indian Mutiny, African Wars (including Zulu, Egypt and Sudan), Boer War & WW1.

10.00 am - 12.30 pm - Organising Your Family History

Looking at different methods of storing your research either on paper or on computer: good practices of research; keeping/storing records, documents, photos etc.  Lots of practical advice will be given.

A practical session exploring and discussing different ways of writing up and presenting your research.

10.00am - 4.00pm: Life in the Big House Upstairs & Downstairs

A look at life in the ‘big house’ from 1800 – 1918. How to trace ancestors who were in domestic service and / or those who employed servants. By 1900 about 2 million people were employed in domestic service.

Friday 11th July

10.00am - 4.00pm: Dorset Ancestry

We will look at the various records available to those researching ancestors in Dorset, including local and national records. How Dorset ancestors moved around the county, the families they married into and the trades they followed. The social conditions of the time will be also be looked at and where to find the more unusual sources. Please bring your Dorset research along.

Friday 26th September

10.00am - 4.00pm: Transport: Road, Rail, Water & Air

We will explore the development of transport from the 1750’s to 1930’s and how it changed the lives of our ancestors. To include turnpike roads, canals, the coming of the railways, sailing ships to steam, horse and cart to motor vehicles, bicycles and air travel. The development of all these introduced different new occupations and saw many people leaving the land. Please bring along your research with examples of the topic.

Scotland & Ireland

Scotland (Half day 10am - 12.30pm)

For those people who have started researching in Scotland and would like to look at various sources, exchange ideas and update their knowledge. We will look at the movement of people from the highlands to the cities and migration overseas.

For those people who have started researching in Ireland and would like to look at various sources, exchange ideas and update their knowledge.  We will look at the movement of people from the land to Dublin and Belfast, Irish communities in England and migration overseas.

Friday 14th November

10.00am - 4.00pm: Industrial Revolution

We will look at the development of the Industrial Revolution from the 1750’s to the 1920’s. How did it all begin? The woollen and cotton industry, coal mines and developments in transport will be covered. Movement and migration of our ancestors, how they left the land and went to the cities. How Dorset was affected by what was happening in the north and midlands.
