Can anyone help me please?
I want to find out why Geoffrey Walter Britten was awarded the MBE. He died in Gillingham in 1947, [information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website].
I have searched the London Gazette and Googled the name and award, but haven't had any success.
I don't know where to try next. Has anyone any ideas?

I had a similar problem searching the London Gazette for an off-shoot ancestor and worked my way through every variation of name/initials/surname until I found him. There was probably also an item in his local newspaper when he was awarded the MBE.
Good luck, Jan Spink
For others, there is a good web site at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_British_Empire
It lists many of those honoured, and a short resume of their work. Similarly for other types of honour (KBE, OBE, etc) but unfortunately doesn't list Mr Britten, although it might be worth another look.
Jill, if you know when this honour was given, it would be worth checking the local newspapers.
