Writing up our Family History by Chris Lightfoot – at St George’s Hall

June 18 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

£3.00

Chris’ talk is aimed at family history researchers who have often done years of research but have given little thought as to what they are going to do with it. Many people think that the research is all that has to be done but it is also important to make research accessible and enjoyable for family, friends and future generations. But, this doesn’t mean trying to write up a complete family history – this method is almost doomed to failure.  Chris focuses on looking for and writing the stories most people discover while researching their family history. These stories can stand alone or be the building blocks for a longer narrative. Not many people are interested in lists of names and dates and boxes of documents and so it is important to ensure that years of research are not wasted or forgotten and the best way to do this is to pick out some good stories and write them up.

Chris worked as a technical and commercial writer and editor for many years for a variety of national and international companies but more recently she has used her skills as a writer and editor to help new and inexperienced writers of non-fiction. One of her specific areas of interest is family history and so in addition to writing magazine articles and guest posts on the topic of writing a family history, she also set up her own website Beginners Guide to Writing where she provides help and advice for writers of nonfiction through her blogs, books and workshops. She has also rewritten/edited family history books for a number of clients.

Doors open 7pm.
